Meet Valerie Bellenger, PsyD: Exploring the Patterns That Shape How We Love

I'm so excited to introduce you to Valerie Bellenger, PsyD, the newest doctor to join Paradigm Psychology.

Every time I bring someone onto this team, I ask myself the same question. Would I trust this person with the parts of people that are hardest to say out loud? With Dr. Valerie, the answer was an easy yes.

When I first spoke with Dr. Valerie, I was struck by how comfortable she is sitting with the things most people avoid. She brings genuine curiosity and warmth to even the heaviest conversations, and I knew right away she belonged here.

Dr. Valerie works with adults who want to understand the deeper patterns running their lives. Why do I keep ending up in the same relationship with a different person? Why does closeness feel so good and so scary at the same time? Why can't I just stop doing the thing I swore I'd stop doing?

These are her questions. She specializes in relationship difficulties, attachment wounds, trauma, anxiety, identity concerns, and life transitions. What sets her apart is her interest in the parts of ourselves we'd rather not look at. The desires we don't admit to. The fears we cover up. The defenses we built for good reasons and never took down. The contradictions that make us human.

A Different Way of Looking at Symptoms

Dr. Valerie's approach is depth-oriented, psychodynamic, and relational. She also draws on attachment theory, trauma-informed care, and DBT.

What that means for you: she isn't just trying to make your symptoms go away. She's curious about what they're trying to tell you. Anxiety, shutting down, and pushing people away almost always started as protection. Understanding what they're protecting is where real change begins.

If you've read my post on curiosity, you know how much I believe in this. Dr. Valerie lives it.

Talking About the Things We Don't Talk About

Her doctoral research explored the erotic shadow and its role in strengthening intimate relationships. In plain terms, she studies how the hidden parts of our desire and sexuality can bring couples closer instead of driving them apart.

Most people have never had a safe place to talk about sexuality, desire, relationship structures, or identity without feeling judged. Dr. Valerie offers exactly that. She approaches these conversations with curiosity, warmth, and zero judgment.

A Writer at Heart

Before psychology, Dr. Valerie studied writing. She earned degrees in creative and critical writing from Middlesex University and the University of Sussex in the UK. Then she completed her doctorate in Counseling Psychology at Pacifica Graduate Institute.

I love this about her. Good therapy and good writing have a lot in common. Both are about finding the story underneath the story, and helping someone put words to something they've felt for years but never named.

Her clinical experience is broad. She has worked in private practice, telehealth, residential treatment, substance use recovery, child and adolescent psychology, and forensic settings. She has seen people at their hardest moments, and she knows how to meet them there.

What It's Like to Work With Her

Dr. Valerie describes her style as warm, direct, curious, and collaborative. She believes therapy can do more than reduce distress. It can help you understand why you relate to yourself and others the way you do. Then you get to decide what to carry forward, and what you're ready to change.

Dr. Valerie is a Registered Psychological Associate practicing under my supervision.

If you've been circling the idea of therapy, or you're ready to understand your patterns instead of just managing them, I'd love for you to meet her. She's currently accepting new clients virtually, throughout California. Reach out to schedule a free consultation and see if she's the right fit for you.

Welcome to the team, Dr. Valerie. We're so lucky to have you.
